Over the past few years, camper vans have become one of the go-to choices for road trippers, outdoor adventurers, and young souls chasing the freedom of life on the open road. But are camper vans really the best option for your travels? Let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons to help you decide.

The Pros of Camper Vans

1. Easy to Drive and Park

Unlike bulky RVs, camper vans (often referred to as Class B RVs) are compact, making them easier to maneuver on highways, winding roads, or into tight parking spots. You can pull into a standard parking space or city lot without the stress of driving a large motorhome.

2. Fuel Efficiency

Camper vans typically offer better fuel economy than larger RVs. Some lightweight models of the Mercedes Sprinter or Ford Transit, can achieve 18–22 mpg, which can save you a significant amount on longer road trips. Note: the more interior and exterior accessories a van has, the lower its fuel efficiency will be. If maximum fuel efficiency is important to you, look for a similar buildout.

3. Versatility

A camper van doubles as both your rental car and your Airbnb. Whether you’re picking your kids up from school, exploring national parks or boondocking on BLM land, these vehicles are designed to get you in and out with ease.

4. Access to More Destinations

Due to their size, camper vans can access campsites, trailheads, and scenic pull-offs that larger RVs cannot. You’re less restricted by road width, height limits, or campground space. Many times, campgrounds will allow you to camp in tent-only campsites if your van is short enough (usually 20’ or less).

5. Modern Amenities

If you can dream it, you can build it. Many of today’s camper vans feature finishes that you would find in a home remodel. Features such as kitchens, bathrooms, and self-contained power solutions are common upgrades. At altCamp, our luxury Signature Collection fleet features fully equipped Mercedes Sprinter vans with premium amenities, including iPads, fully stocked kitchens with refrigerators, comfortable beds, and more.

The Cons of Camper Vans

1. Limited Space

Camper vans are cozy but compact. For families or groups larger than 4 people, the interior space may feel tight. It’s perfect for solo travelers, couples, and young families, but if you plan to bring along both the kids and the cousins, it might be a tight fit.

2. Price Point

Due to the high level of customization possible with camper vans, they can be pricey to build and buy. Newly customized Mercedes Sprinter vans can range in price from $125,000 to $300,000 (for reference, a new 4x4 or all-wheel-drive chassis from Mercedes will cost around $85,000). DIY camper vans built on lower-cost chassis like the Ford Transit or Dodge Promaster will likely cost less. Rental costs for camper vans can also exceed some motorhomes, even though they are smaller and less spacious.

3. Smaller Storage Capacity

Because of their compact design, you may have to pack lighter than you would if you had a motorhome. Bulky gear like bikes or surfboards might require additional racks or storage solutions.

4. No Separate Tow Vehicle

Unlike travel trailers or fifth wheels, you can’t leave your “home” at a campsite while you run errands or explore nearby towns. You’ll need to break down camp each time you drive away (or bring a bicycle!).

Is a Camper Van Right for You?

If you value flexibility, convenience, and the ability to travel wherever the road leads, a camper van might be your ideal travel companion. For those who prefer more space or have larger families, a travel trailer or motorhome might make more sense.

At altCamp, we offer a curated fleet of luxury camper vans that strike the perfect balance between comfort and adventure. Whether you want to try van life for a weekend or a cross-country road trip, our vehicles are fully equipped for your journey.
