The inaugural altCamp Pricing Index analyzes 3,243 active US camper van and Class B rental listings to answer the question travelers actually ask. Below, the headline numbers, a metro-by-metro grid, and the trends shaping rental pricing in the first quarter of 2026.

The median camper van rental in the United States costs $220 per night in Q1 2026. Most travelers pay between $175 and $275 per night, with weekly rentals averaging $1,309 and month-long rentals averaging $4,950. Pricing varies by host, market, and season.

§ 00 — Reading the Numbers

How rental pricing actually works.

Most camper van rentals are priced per night, but the longer you book, the lower the effective nightly rate. Discount tiers vary from host to host, but the industry discounts assumed in this report are:

What's not in the headline rate.

On top of the nightly rental rate, travelers should plan for three near-universal add-ons:

  • Renter's insurance — typically $30 to $80 per day depending on coverage level. Required on all bookings.
  • Refundable security deposit — median $750. Held at booking and released after the trip if the van returns in good condition.
  • One-time prep fee — median $119. Covers cleaning, restocking, and turnover between renters.

All figures throughout this report are medians drawn from active US listings. Pricing varies by host, market, and season. Treat these numbers as benchmarks, not quotes.

§ 01 — Pricing by State

The state-by-state pricing grid.

Rental rates vary widely by region. New Jersey leads the top 25 states at a median of $335 per night, driven by a concentration of premium luxury builds. Hawaii sits at the opposite end at $144 per night, reflecting both smaller, simpler vehicles and competitive market dynamics on the islands.

§ 02 — Pricing by Metro

Top rental markets, ranked.

Rolling listings up to US Census Metropolitan Statistical Areas paints a sharper picture than ranking individual cities. The Maui MSA anchors the affordable end at $135 per night, while New York and Bozeman top the list near $320, both reflecting markets where luxury and gateway-destination demand push rates well above the national median.

The 25 metros below represent the highest concentration of available inventory, making them the most reliable benchmarks for travelers planning a trip.

§ 03 — Pricing by Vehicle Age

Newer vehicles, sharper premiums.

Vehicle age is one of the strongest predictors of rental price. A van built in the last two years rents for a median of $279 per night, 65% more than a van from 2015 or earlier. For travelers focused on getting maximum value without sacrificing reliability, vehicles in the 6 to 10-year range strike a sensible middle ground at around $200 per night.

Vehicle-age cohorts based on model year, relative to 2026.

§ 04 — Pricing by Make

From workhorse to high-end builds.

Vehicle make is closely tied to build quality and brand positioning. Boutique manufacturers like Ultimate Toys ($455/night) and Midwest Automotive Designs ($375/night) sit at the luxury end. Mainstream Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Winnebago builds anchor the middle tier at roughly $230–$240 per night, while older Ford, Dodge, and Chevrolet conversions provide the most accessible entry points.

§ 05 — Beyond the Nightly Rate

The fees travelers should budget for.

A camper van rental quote rarely tells the full story. Most listings include a refundable security deposit, a one-time prep fee, and optional add-ons like delivery to the campsite or trailhead. The figures below reflect the median across all 3,243 active listings in the index.

$750
Median Security Deposit

Refundable hold at booking. Most listings range from $500 to $1,000.

$119
Median Prep Fee

One-time cleaning and turnover fee. Charged on roughly 80% of listings.

$2.50
Median Delivery Per Mile

Optional. Roughly 56% of hosts will deliver the van to a chosen pickup point.

Q1 2026 Highlights

Five things that defined the first quarter of 2026.

01 / Newer Inventory Premium

Vans built in 2024 or later are commanding a 65% premium over decade-old conversions, the widest gap we've seen heading into a peak booking season.

02 / Hawaii Holds the Floor

At $135 per night, the Maui MSA is the most affordable major rental market in the country. Urban Honolulu sits second at $140, both reflecting smaller, simpler builds and competitive island dynamics.

03 / Northeast Premium Persists

New York-Newark-Jersey City leads all top-25 metros at $321 per night. Higher cost of living, dense luxury inventory, and gateway demand continue to push regional rates well above the national median.

04 / Mountain West Inventory Grows

Colorado, Utah, and Montana collectively house 481 listings. Strong supply heading into the late-spring and summer travel surge in the Mountain West.

05 / Delivery Becomes the Norm

56% of hosts now offer delivery to a chosen pickup point, at a median rate of $2.50 per mile, lowering the friction for fly-in travelers.

06 / Min-Age 25 Dominates

62% of hosts require renters to be at least 25 years old. The remainder typically accept renters 21 and up, sometimes with a young-driver surcharge.

§ 06 — How We Did It

Methodology & data notes.

The altCamp Pricing Index is published quarterly. Every issue analyzes a fresh snapshot of active listings to capture how rental pricing is moving across the US market.

Methodology

Sample Size
3,243 active US camper van and Class B motorhome listings, captured in April 2026 for the Q1 reporting period.
Vehicle Scope
The index combines camper vans (1,672 listings) and Class B motorhomes (1,571 listings), which are typically presented as a single category to consumer travelers and overlap heavily in vehicle profile.
Geographic Scope
All 50 US states. The state table shows the top 25 markets by active listing count. The metro table rolls listings up to US Census Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), using strict Census definitions, and reports the top 25 MSAs by listing count.
Central Tendency
We report median pricing rather than mean to avoid distortion from luxury outliers (the data set includes individual listings priced above $1,000 per night).
Weekly & Monthly
Reflect the median weekly and monthly prices set by hosts on active listings. These approximate but are not derived from the industry-standard discount tiers (15% off for 7+ nights, 20% off for 14+ nights, 25% off for 30+ nights).
Additional Fees
Security deposit, prep fee, and delivery rate figures are based on the median value across all listings reporting that fee.

The Q1 2026 edition is the inaugural altCamp Pricing Index. Each subsequent quarterly report will track how these benchmarks evolve in response to seasonality, fuel costs, fleet composition, and broader travel demand.

How much does it cost to rent a camper van for a week?

A typical week-long camper van rental costs $1,309 in Q1 2026, which works out to roughly $187 per night.

This reflects the industry-standard 15% discount applied to the median nightly rate for rentals of 7+ nights. Pricier markets like New Jersey, Montana, and Texas push weekly rentals above $1,600, while budget-friendly Hawaii averages $857 per week.

How much does it cost to rent a camper van for a month?

A month-long camper van rental costs a median of $4,950 in Q1 2026, or approximately $165 per night.

Are there discounts for longer camper van rentals?

Yes. Camper van pricing follows a four-tier discount structure:

3 nights at the base rate (the standard host minimum), 7+ nights at 15% off, 14+ nights at 20% off, and 30+ nights at 25% off.

Applied to the national median, that's $220 per night at the base, $187 per night for a week, $176 per night for two weeks, and $165 per night for a month.

What additional fees should I expect when renting a camper van?

Beyond the base rental rate, plan for these common add-ons:

A refundable security deposit (median $750), a one-time prep or cleaning fee (median $119), and optional delivery if the host offers it (typically $2.50 per mile from the host's home base).

Insurance, mileage overages, generator hours, and pet fees can add additional costs depending on the listing.

What's included in a camper van rental?

Most rentals include the basics: bedding and linens, cookware and dishes, a stocked kitchen, fresh water, and (where equipped) heat, air conditioning, and a toilet.

Specifics vary widely by host. Most listings publish a "What's Included" inventory detailing exactly what comes with the van. Items like camp chairs, outdoor showers, generators, and Wi-Fi hotspots are often optional or available for an additional fee.

What is the cheapest state to rent a camper van?

Among the top 25 states by listing volume, Hawaii is the most affordable at $144 per night, followed by Florida and Minnesota at $195, and Oregon at $196.

Oregon and Florida are particularly strong values among mainland markets with consistent year-round availability.

On the mainland, the next-cheapest metros all cluster in the $194 to $200 range, including Minneapolis-St. Paul, San Diego, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, San Jose, Portland, and Bend.

What is the most expensive US metro to rent a camper van?

Atlanta ($272), Chicago ($262), Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth (both $250) round out the most expensive markets, all reflecting either dense urban premiums or gateway-destination dynamics.

Does the age of the camper van affect rental price?

Significantly. Vans built in 2024 to 2026 command a median $279 per night, while vans 11 years or older average $169 per night, a 39% discount.

Mid-age vans (3 to 5 years) at $233 per night offer a popular balance of modern features, reliability, and lower rates.

How old do you have to be to rent a camper van?
